Dyn Inc. Story from DynDNS.org in 1998 to Today
The Dyn Inc. story is not unlike many tech start-up stories.
The difference is that our story started during the dot-com boom, survived through the bust, thrived after the dust settled and surges ahead today. Deep-rooted as an Internet infrastructure company focused on the domain name system (DNS), the company has always put its customers first. Today Dyn Inc. is positioned much different than its competition, as a company its clients and users take pride in working with and supporting. That started at day one.
Like many of its Web 2.0 customers looking to monetize, Dyn Inc. has been there, done that.
Similar to featured clients Twitter, Meetup, Bit.ly, Scribd, Twitpic and Wikia, Dyn Inc. started as a free service, based out of a college apartment. A couple guys with a big idea. That service, then operating as DynDNS.org, was a dynamic DNS service for a home user to host a website on their home computer or remote access back to their PC. Over time, as the user base grew and became more demanding, Dyn Inc. turned to a donation-based service in an effort to stay afloat and add complimentary services. Later, Dyn Inc. transitioned to a recurring revenue software-as-a-service (SaaS) model with a suite of IT services aimed at the home/SMB market.
Fast forward to 2005 and the story of maturation continues.
Dyn Inc. initiated a customer audit and mining exercise of the over two million active DynDNS.com users at the time. From this, the company realized that many high profile corporations were using its consumer-grade service (we won't rat them out here). This revelation coupled with the simple fact that the premium external managed DNS industry lacked options, encouraged Dyn Inc. to unveil a new brand, the Dynect Platform. Dynect was introduced to the outsourced DNS market in the fall of 2007 and DynDNS.com move-ups and new customers alike gave thanks.
Today Dyn Inc. has served over 12 million home/SMB users on the DynDNS.com brand and has several hundred corporate/enterprise customers on its globally deployed, Dynect Platform. 2009 has been a banner year and the future is brighter than ever. The company has moved beyond word of mouth growth and become a much more proactive player, and the industry has taken notice.
