PAX East 2012: 5 Things To Look Forward To

There comes a time in every geek’s life where he or she should take a pilgrimage to Boston, Massachusetts in April for PAX East. For some of us at Dyn, that time is now. Brian McCall, AJ Garron, Kyle Welch and I will be conquering every nerd’s dreams of patrolling the PAX East floor and after some thorough investigation, I’ve put together a list of five things to look forward to at PAX East 2012.

Behind The Scenes At A DynTini

It’s a Tuesday in late January around dinner time and swarms of people are hurrying to 150 Dow Street. The smell of Queen City Cupcakes fills the air as the doors constantly revolve, bringing in fresh and eager faces. A crowd gathers around the custom martini bar and with lights flashing, Jay Nash takes the stage. The night has just begun.

If you’ve ever taken a tour around our headquarters, there’s no question Dyn has an “out of the box” perspective. As a company, we are constantly looking for ways to stand out and put both Dyn and Manchester, NH, on the map. We enjoy sharing our individuality with others and our events, especially DynTinis, are a great way to bring the community together.

Not only do people have an amazing night of great food, music, and socializing, but it also provides an excellent source of awareness for us: Who are they? What does Dyn actually do? How can that help me?  We don’t turn down any chance at networking with current customers or potential clients.

Much like the services we provide, these events almost seem like they come together by magic. You’re not exactly sure how things got there or what goes on behind-the-scenes. All you know is it took some planning, it works and it’s awesome! But when you take a peek behind the curtain at a DynTini, it may surprise you about the amount of preparation that actually goes into an event.

PyCon 2012

A Look Back At PyCon 2012

Dyn’s theme for this year is simple: Better. Faster. Stronger. And what better way to celebrate that than by attending technical conventions and learning ways to improve our code, learning about new projects we can leverage, and taking part in what makes open source so successful: the community?

This year’s PyCon US in Santa Clara, CA, was the largest to date at over 2200 attendees – a sign that the Python community is truly thriving, especially considering the fact that the cap for registrations was set at 1500.

Dyn & Open Source: 2011 In Review, 2012 And Beyond

Dyn has always had a history of working with Open Source software and communities, but that has fallen slightly by the wayside as our company has grown and evolved. This was not purposeful; we just lost sight of these things as we became busier and no one had the time to pick up the slack.

But in 2011, we decided to make a concerted effort to once again mingle with and support the communities that provide the software we thrive on. Here’s a look back at 2011 and what’s ahead in 2012 and beyond.

Cory Booker Stage

Celebrating Being FITN With Newt Gingrich, Cory Booker Visits

When I first moved here in 2001, I quickly learned about one of the unique aspects of living in New Hampshire: Granite Staters love their politics. Maybe it’s because of the First In The Nation (#FITN) primaries or giving us something to discuss during the winter months when it’s cold or the summer when the Red Sox frustrate us, but politics go hand-in-hand with NH like uptime and Dyn.

That’s one of the reasons we’re excited our new offices in Manchester have become a destination point for some of the most well-known names on the political scene to visit when they spend time in the Queen City. As one of the leading technology companies in the 03101-03109 (and NH in general), we want them to see what a small startup is capable of: job growth, company culture, civic pride and a cornerstone for what we think will be a technology haven in upcoming years.

On Friday, we had Newark, NJ, Mayor Cory Booker in the house and on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich will come by for a unique session open to the public.

Dyn - Culture-Con

Culture-Con: What It Is, Why We’re Doing It, Why You Should Come

After being named a “Best Company” for four straight years, Dyn recently entered Business NH Magazine’s Hall of Fame for best places to work and also were named one of Inc. Magazine’s top workplaces in 2011, But while awards are great, we’re more interested in sharing ideas to create and maintain a unique culture both here and with fellow New Hampshire companies and beyond.

With that in mind, we’re hosting our first-ever Culture-Con on January 31st at our Manchester, NH headquarters — an event designed to help companies of all sizes that are looking to improve their culture and get insight into how to do just that.

SXSW 2012

SXSW 2012: The Road Back To Austin Starts With Your Votes

While some of us at are still recovering from the epic parties (including our own), the innovative sessions and the great networking that took place at the 2011 South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) festival in Austin, TX, others here are already in deep preparation for the 2012 event and we need your help!

We admit that we went a little rogue this past March in the city that likes to keep it weird but this time around, we are planning to follow the rules (Ok, MOST of them).  Our first step? Submit an actual presentation and hope everyone thinks the subject matter is as cool as we do. We’ve done our best to make DNS sexy and email delivery cool and now we want to show our loves of both off to the audience at SXSW.

Dyn Attending, Sponsoring October’s Pittsburgh Perl Workshop

A short while back, I wrote about Dyn going to YAPC::NA 2011 and while the conference has come and gone, I’m still feeling the energy I picked up from attending it.

The YAPC conferences are a great chance for members of the Perl community to gather and exchange ideas, presenting companies like ours with the opportunity to learn new things and give back to the community.

There were great talks and chance meetings in the hallways with many wonderful people and the few Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions I attended were exciting with projects moving forward because of them.

Marketing With Flaming Dragons And Other Pearls of Wisdom from Velocity 2011

Every year at the web performance and operations-centric O’Reilly Velocity conference, Adam Jacob from Opscode leads a crowd full of the world’s best and brightest web experts through a “Choose Your Own Adventure” series.

The first one up? An introduction to Sales & Marketing for techies, or perhaps better described in this simple three-step plan for success:

1) Build a trap.

2) Use flaming dragons (marketers) and wield fire swords & bald eagle shields (salespeople) to chase potential customers into the trap.

3) Profit!!!

All kidding aside, this really is one of the best shows we attend each year as it’s jam packed with best practices from industry veterans like Heroku, Netflix, Facebook, Etsy, Dyn, Opscode and many, many more. Here are the major takeaways, aka The Pearls Of Wisdom, from this year’s Velocity 2011 event.
